I tried a new recipe last night, and it was DELISH! I actually mixed a few recipe's together to make it taste how I wanted.
It's not the leanest meal on the planet, but the whole family devoured it...and hey, I threw in some bananas!
What was this delicious dish?
Hawaiian Bread French toast with homemade caramel syrup, and bananas.
We use this bread for some Hawaiian chicken sandwiches we love, and we get the rolls for deli sandwiches. This was something new...and it was fabulous for french toast.
The French toast:
The syrup with banana slices...I had to leave some of the syrup plain, not all my kids wanted bananas. It was so good though...almost tasted like banana bread.
The final goods....so yummy!
French Toast:
1 cup half & half or milk (I used milk)
2 eggs
2 tbsp. maple syrup
1/8 tsp. salt
8 (1/2 inch thick) slices Hawaiian bread (i cut the whole loaf, and ended up w/ about 18 pieces)
4 tbsp. butter
2 bananas thinly sliced
cinnamon, powdered sugar ( I added these)
1. Whisk together milk, eggs, maple syrup, salt & cinnamon(to taste) in shallow bowl. (i wanted to cook the entire loaf of bread, and needed that much for my whole family, so I doubled this mixture & got about 18 pieces out of it.)
2. Dip bread in egg mixture and soak each side 30 seconds. Transfer to baking sheet & let stand 1-2 minutes.
3. Melt butter in large nonstick skillet over md. heat. (i used our large griddle...keep the heat a little lower than pancakes, around 300 so it will cook slower, and you wont burn the outside & have soggy insides.) Cook bread slices 2-3 minutes per side.
Top with homemade syrup, and banana slices, and powdered sugar.
You can stop there, and just add your favorite maple syrup, or you can really wow your family, and make this syrup. You wont be disappointed, I wanted to drink it with a straw. :)
Homemade caramel syrup:
1 1/2 c. white sugar
3/4 c. buttermilk
1/2 c. butter
2 tbsp. corn syrup
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. vanilla
In sauce pan (larger the better, I used a small one, and it boiled over & made a huge mess) stir together sugar, buttermilk, butter, corn syrup, & baking soda. Bring to boil over medium heat. Cook for 7 min. (may need to reduce heat to keep from boil over).
Remove from heat & stir in vanilla.
(if adding bananas...let the syrup cool a bit, then add banana slices, and heat over low heat till warm)
that looks soooooooooooooo good candice - i LOVE french toast!

Well, I would like to be part of the group and gush but CANDICE...what food groups are represented here? Where's the green stuff? Where's the lean protein? Where's the complex carbohydrates!?!? Did anyone lapse into a fructose induced coma after dinner???
I'll get off my soapbox now. There's a half-eaten three pound solid chocolate heart calling my name.

Deb, I LOVE it that you admit those things...makes me feel better about the things I eat. :)

I love that bread. I once bought a loaf and ate the whole thing by myself before returning home with the groceries. I know I shouldn't admit these things...
